Intimacy with God precedes the power of God.
I recently found out that my 11 year old son is doing poorly in literature. He has failed the last two quizzes over his assigned reading. He was frustrated that he wasn’t doing well. I could tell he didn’t understand why he was struggling.
So I decided to give him an analogy.
“How well do you know me?” I asked him.
“Very well,” he said looking up to me.
I nodded. “Yes, I think you do, so you would have an A+ in our relationship because you know me.”
“But how do you know me so well?” I asked.
He thought. “We spend time together. You tuck me in every night. You help me with my homework. We talk,” he suggested.
“Exactly!” I exclaimed. “You have an A+ because you spend time with me.”
Now I looked at him seriously. “Do you spend a lot of time with your literature homework?”
“No,” he said, looking slightly embarrassed.
“If you don’t read your book assignments and get to know the story, will you do well on the quizzes?”
He shook his head.
“You have a failing grade in literature because you don’t know the information very well. If you want to do well, you will need to spend time with the book and get to know it, right?”
“Yes,” he whispered.
I hugged him. “It will take time, but once you get to know the story, you will do well on the quizzes.”
I just found out today that he got an A+ on his literature quiz. It’s been almost two weeks and his grade is already improving. He’s getting to know the information, so he’s empowered to do well.
This story reminds me of a truth that many people miss. We can’t expect the fullness of God’s power, peace and provision in our lives if we don’t get to know Him. Many times we want these A+ relationships with God, yet we don’t read His Word, spend time with Him in prayer and listen and obey His voice.
Although we are saved by grace, and we have received an A+ as God’s sons and daughters, our intimacy with Him is up to us. God’s Spirit is always available to be known and to know, but we must invest our time, energy and resources into our relationship with Him. Only then can we walk in an A+ serving of His power.God's power in your life is directly related to your intimacy with Him. Click To Tweet
“I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 1.19-20 NLT).
