Scraps for Dogs
“She replied, ‘That’s true, Lord, but even dogs are allowed to eat the scraps that fall beneath their masters’ table’” (Matthew 15.27 NLT).
The Gentile woman’s daughter is sick. She knows that Jesus is the Son of David, the promised Savior to the Jewish people and the world. She knows He can perform miracles. She knows that He can save her daughter. But God has a process for everything, and Jesus’ earthly ministry was geared towards His people, the Jews. It would be the Apostle Paul that would bring the Good News to the rest of the world. But this woman is undeterred. She has so much faith in Jesus and what He can do that it usurps who she is and the cultural biases towards her as a gentile, a woman and an outcast. Jesus tested this faith, cultivating it and making it ignite within her. She had a head knowledge of who Jesus truly was, but He wanted her knowledge to permeate into her actions, her determination and her persistence. Jesus called out the faith within the people He encountered. He looked within their souls and tested their belief, causing the faith to either rise up or fade away. The woman would not give up because she knew that His mercies were not based on who she was. They were based on who Jesus is—the Son of God who is full of love and mercy and who willingly gave His life to save the world. Claim the miraculous mercies of Jesus today—mercies that have nothing to do with you, and everything to do with Him.
“‘Dear woman,’ Jesus said to her, ‘your faith is great. Your request is granted.’ And her daughter was instantly healed” (Matthew 15.28 NLT).
