“Always be joyful.” – 1 Thessalonians 5.16 (NLT)
On Day 32 in Following God Across the Page, I write about the second day after surgery where Christina and I fell into laughing fits. The laughing was hilarious, but it also aggravated the pain my twin felt from surgery, which made the situation funnier. Christina was in so much pain, but her spirit was so joyful despite the post-surgery situation she was in. It may seem weird, but sometimes life gets so hard and the pain is so real that you simply have to laugh, and laughing is the best thing to do!
The Bible says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” – Proverbs 17.22 Thank you to, Michael S. Kosch, for the Botched laughing meme of my sister!
Laughing may seem to contradict the painful situation, but when all tears are shed, there is nothing more you can do other than cling onto joy. We have to trust that God is good. We live in a fallen world, and people have free will to cause pain and heartache. But people also have the ability to create beauty, and God can heal the brokenness in our circumstances. Wounds can heal, and laughing is the best medicine available.
The image above is of the necklace that I gave my sister and our family and friends at the Botched Reveal. The necklace is based on Psalm 147.3 “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” The necklaces were created by Joy in the Gems. The best way to heal is to allow God to fill you with His joy and laughter!
