One of the most painful aspects of my twin sister’s recovery was caused by the doctors cracking and taking a piece of her rib. They sculpted the piece of rib and placed it in her nose to reconstruct the inside and fix the twisting. Although her face and nose did hurt, it was pain in her chest that prevented her from sleeping soundly. She couldn’t get out of bed unless I wrapped my arms around her and brought her to sitting position with a giant hug. So I did a lot of hugging the first three days post surgery.
The other thing that I had to help with was the medicine that she had to take. Some medicine had to be crushed in water and put in her nose. Other medicines were ointments. Then she had oral medicines and pain killers. I am not great with written directions, so I needed the grace of God to help me figure out the amount of medicines she needed to take and when she had to take them. We went to the doctor’s office right when we left the recovery hotel, but after that the nursing staff was gone. I instantly became a nurse. My sister had no idea what she was taking most of the time. I would grab what she needed, hand her a glass of water and she would gulp down whatever was in her hand. She totally trusted me!
God definitely gave me grace during that time to be proficient at things that I normally was not good at. I sat down with all of her medicines, organized the bottles and made a chart of everything she needed. I am glad to say that we had no mishaps and my sister did not have to worry about a thing except resting and healing. You can read about this and more in my book, Following God Across the Page, which details our experience on the Season 5 Premiere of Botched as Dr. Nassif reconstructed my sister’s nose.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take.” – Proverbs 3.5-6 (NLT)
