The day before Christina’s surgery, we took an Uber into Koreatown, Los Angeles, to attend Sunday morning church service at Oasis Church LA. Pastor Philip Wagner (I love that he has the same last name as I do!) offered an amazing sermon about trusting God. Little did he know, we were in the middle of filming for a reality TV show, Botched, and my twin was about to have reconstructive nose surgery.
The amazing part of the service was that the church did communion that morning. I was so excited! My sister and I were able to partake in the Lord’s Super before a very daunting day. I know that the bread represents the Body of Jesus Christ that was pierced and wounded, so we could be forgiven of all the things that separate us from a Holy God. And I know that by the wounds Jesus suffered on the cross that my twin sister was already healed! Thank You, God, for that reminder just before Dr. Nassif took her into his operating room the following morning!
“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53.5 NIV).
And the wine (juice) represents the Blood of Jesus Christ, the essence of our God clothed in flesh poured out over all creation, reconciling us back into the arms of a God who loves us. If God loves us so much that even when we were yet sinners He would die for us, I knew that my twin sister was safe in His hands. We had no reason to fear, and I set my mind and heart to go into my twin’s surgery with faith that she would be cared for. I would not succumb to doubt.
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5.8 NIV).
