“Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light” (Matthew 11.29-30 NLT).
Jesus’ promises can be counted on. When He says that He is “humble and gentle,” He means it. And when He says that His “yoke is easy to bear,” we can trust Him at His Word. So why do we feel overwhelmed sometimes even though Jesus has given us these promises? God’s Truth doesn’t change according to our feelings and it doesn’t depend on our circumstances. God’s Truth is unchanging. When we feel overwhelmed two things may be happening. First, we are taking on a yoke that was never meant for us. Comparison and insecurity—both linked to pride—can cause our thoughts and actions to move in ways outside of God’s will for our lives. When we put our focus on others and not on Jesus Christ, we may begin to commit to and sacrifice for things that are not our burdened to bear. Second, we may not be fully embracing the grace that God is giving us in our situation. God matches our heartache with His grace. This grace is supernatural and the peace we gain surpasses all understanding, but it takes faith to receive it (Philippians 4.7). If our minds are stuck on an earthly perspective and not on God’s perspective, we may miss out on the grace upon grace that God is pouring out from His abundance and into our hearts, minds and lives.
“For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace” (John 1.16 ESV).
