“Truly, God will not do wrong. The Almighty will not twist justice” (Job 34.12 NLT).
People wonder why the cross is important. If God is God, why can’t He just forgive our sins without payment? Why did Jesus need to sacrifice His perfect life on the cross to pay for our guilt-debt? The answer is simple: God is a just God. Yes, He is Love, but He is also Justice. He will not “twist justice.” He cannot be corrupted even by His great love for His children. He could not govern heaven and earth if He compromised His own standard. So instead of allowing us to die in our own guilt, which we deserve, He paid for our guilt through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Therefore, both God’s love and His justice stand arm and arm, neither compromised or removed, standing as pillars, upholding God’s great universe. Only a sinless person could take the guilt of another person. Otherwise, he would still have his own guilt to pay and unable to pay for the guilt of another. But Jesus was guiltless, and He gave us His perfection in exchange for our shame. He buried our sin in the grave, and rose again leaving that sin behind. We have been made righteous, holy and perfect by the Finished Work of Jesus on the Cross, so now we can have a relationship with our loving and just Heavenly Father.
“Could God govern if he hated justice? Are you going to condemn the almighty judge?” (Job 34.17).
