“Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart'” (John 7.38 NLT).
Our bodies cannot survive but a mere few days without water. Luckily, water is found in almost every material we consume. Most of us are receiving just enough water to survive but not near enough to thrive. A CBS report suggests that as much as 75% of people in the US are “functioning in a chronic state of dehydration,” consuming under the suggested 10 glasses of water a day (ref).
Symptoms of dehydration are as follows:
- Increased thirst
- Dry mouth
- Tired or sleepy
- Decreased urine
- Dry skin
- Few or no tears
I would like to suggest even more Christians are spiritually dehydration. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, the seed of His Spirit is awakened inside of us. We so badly want God’s goodness to rule our lives, but the seed of His Spirit is dehydrated in our lives from our lack of watering it with the Living Word, the Bible. The Bible can be found in many things — songs, books, sermons, podcasts, shows — but the best way to stay spiritually hydrated is to drink straight from the source, the Holy Bible.
If we are neglecting our physical hydration, which has noticeable symptoms like the list above, how much more are we neglecting our spiritual hydration?
“Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?” (1 Corinthians 3.16 NLT).
Increased thirst: We are thirsty for God, but we fill that need with worldly things. Jesus is Living Water: John 4.14
Dry mouth: Our spiritual mouths are dry, not speaking His Word in our lives. Speak God’s praises: Psalm 51.15
Tired or sleepy: Our spiritual life is tired and sleeping. We get God’s strength: Isaiah 40.28-29
Decreased urine: Since we are inputting very little of His Word, we have almost nothing of His Word to share with others. What comes in, comes out: Matthew 15.17-18
Headache: Our days are becoming unbearable with a dull ache of living, yet we don’t know how to fix it. Fruits of the Spirit: Galatians 5.22-23
Dry skin: We are not pliable with grace, becoming easily offended and wounded. Need Oil of the Holy Spirit: Acts 10.38
Dizziness: We are confused without godly direction. We have God’s light of understanding: Psalm 119.130
Few or no tears: We have become emotionally bankrupt to God and His movements. God gives us a feeling heart: Ezekiel 36:26
We must put more access points of God’s Word around us–more glasses of Living Water!

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4.12 NIV).
