“Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near” (James 5.7-8 NIV).
David amassed an army while he waited on God’s promise to be king over Israel to come to fruition. Each individual in his army was a necessary pillar holding up the vastness of his leadership. David lived his life, trained his men, hid from King Saul and waited on God to come through for him. By the time King David became king, His God-promise benefited the lives of all his men, their families, all of Israel and eventually all of the world because the Promised Messiah would come through his lineage.
Jesus amassed disciples while He waiting on God’s promise for His life–He would be the Savior of the world. Each disciple also became necessary pillars in the Gospel of Christ on earth. Jesus walked this earth, gathering men and women who would spread the Good News of salvation to others. When His promise came to fruition through death on the Cross and resurrection to the Right Hand of God, salvation and reconciliation shot across space and time.
So what are you amassing as you wait for God’s promises? There is a reason for your wait. God is not simply trying you, testing you or teasing you. He is wanting you to amass knowledge, wisdom, understanding, influence, resources, etc., because His promise to you will not just bless you; it will bless your family, your community, your country and quite possibly the world.
Don’t despair during the wait. Live your life everyday, mindful that each day is a new day to glean and gather whatever it is God is giving you. The wait before the promise is valuable. You are “Gathering Empty Pitchers” that will catch the fall of God’s glory when He rains down on your life.
