“The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus” (Acts 4.13 NLT).
Bold. Ordinary. Jesus. Here are three words that can confound the world. Peter and John were untrained, yet they had wonderful insight of the Scriptures. They had no degrees, no acclaim, no recognition—yet they spoke with boldness. Peter and John proclaimed the name of Jesus Christ and amazed the people around them. God uses the ordinary to confound the wise. There is nothing wrong with earning a theology degree if God wills it, but a theology degree will not move mountains. Only the Holy Spirit working in our lives will cause people to stand in amazement of the goodness and power of God. We don’t need a university to learn about Jesus. The Holy Spirit is our personal teacher, eager to teach us daily if we would only give Him the time. Being homeschooled by the Holy Spirit might not get us a degree or a certificate, but it will change our lives with more power than any manmade honor can offer. We must never give up on learning from the Lord. We have to get out of the “public school” mentality and realize that we have a personal tutor with endless guidance, wisdom and understanding to reveal. The only thing it will cost us is our time and energy, but our tiny bit of resources devoted to enrolling into God’s school will pale in comparison to the wealth of God’s resources He will impart on us.
“The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord, so what wisdom is in them?” (Jeremiah 8.9 ESV).
