Return to Me
“Therefore say to them, Thus declares the Lord of hosts: Return to me, says the Lord of hosts, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts” (Zechariah 1.3 ESV).
What a beautiful promise God gives us. He will return to us when we return to Him! He never says we have to be perfect. He doesn’t says that our lives needs to be in order. He simply says, “Return to me.” Isaiah 53.6 explains that the Messiah will take the iniquities of all of us, and the main source of our iniquities is important to note. The sole culprit of all of our sin is “turning our own way.” Turning our own way–or taking the place as God in our lives–leads to devastation and sorrow. When we take the reins from God’s hands and run our lives according to our needs and our limited understanding, we will not receive the blessings that only He can lead us to. However, if we “turn away” from our self-directed lives, and allow God to lead us, He will fill our lives with His glory, beauty and purpose. This turning away is not just a single decision that occurs once in our lives. Rather, it is a decision we must make every day, laying down our self-directed will and submitting to the holy will of the Father. We can rate and categorize sin, but really that is fruitless. Trying to dictate our own lives is the number one sin that creates havoc in our lives. But at any moment we can stop the madness. All we have to do is turn back to God, and He will turn to us!
“We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53.6 NIV).
