A Declaration of Thanksgiving
“But I with the voice of Thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to the Lord!” (Jonah 2.9 ESV).
Jonah’s life was literally in the pit of despair. He found himself in the belly of a whale for three days. He would have been knee deep in organic, decaying material surrounded by soggy darkness with no hope in sight. The hardest sacrifice to offer God is our thanksgiving when we find ourselves in our own personal pit of despair. When there is no hope and we are knee deep in a desperate situation, thanksgiving feels like the last thing we can give God. We’ll give Him our complaints, our prayers, our petitions…but not our thanksgiving! But very little can shine our faith in God more than when we offer God our praises even though everything seems lost. Thanking God when our situation is bleak shows that we place more belief in Him than we do in our natural circumstances. God wants to intervene on our behalf. He wants to bring His glory into our lives. But He’ll allow the darkness to swallow us for a time, so we can learn to claim His light by faith. The most powerful declaration we can make during hard times is a thanksgiving of God’s faithfulness. Make a choice to praise and thank God without ceasing, and His salvation will be a beacon in your life to all the world!
“The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble” (Psalm 37.39 NIV).
