“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him” (Lamentations 3.24 ESV).
As Christians, the Lord is our portion; and this is a truth that will change every person’s life when he/she fully grasps the weight of it. Although we could never contain the vastness of God–for He is the Creator and beyond our understanding–His grace does enable us to be filled with His presence through the Holy Spirit. Every day we have a mighty portion of the Lord, and He will shape our portion to fit our daily needs. Moreover, when we consider the character of God–full of mercy, grace, love, hope, provision, joy, peace, etc.–we realize that we are tapped into a supernatural River of Living Water that is not based on our temporal circumstances. Yes, it is nice when this world offers us happy situations, and I do think we are supposed to enjoy the mountaintop moments we experience during this life, but for certain we will also walk through the “valley of shadows.” And during both our valley and mountaintop experiences, we can claim the portion of the Lord. He is our joy and hope. He is our peace and love. Through the Father, we have an abundance of grace and mercy, empowering us to make our lives a pleasing offering for His intended purpose and victory. We will never thirst, for our soul has learned to hope in the Lord.
“…but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4.14 NIV).
