In the waiting, God is able expose our need for Him. He strips us of all worldly good until there is nothing left, and then He affirms His love for us in our rawness. Deep in the middle of who we are–struggles, flaws and weakness–God see in us the image of Himself through the lens of Jesus Christ.
It is at this point of exposed vulnerability that we no longer rely on our own strength. God lights our darkness–not to shame us but to teach us to lean solely on Him. Basing our worth on anything other than Jesus’ eternal work on the cross is an injustice to our own soul. Nothing has value outside of our relationship with God through Jesus.
Once God snuffs the lights of our self-efforts, He electrifies our lives with the brilliance of His glory. With hands outstretched, we receive the intensity of our Creator God and wonder why we sought the dim glint of human ingenuity. Surrender is the only path to supernatural living. Humility the only source of eternal honor.
Humans fester under the heat of self-glory, but under the the shadow of God’s glory, we flourish and fly. Let us throw the tiny torches of our self-procolamation to the winds and run to the all-consuming fire of Christ in and around us. Let us not ask for God to provide, but let us recognize that God is our provision. He is our hope. He is our purpose. He is our promise.
Let us begin each day by clinging to Christ, knowing that our work will be an overflow of His indwelling Spirit within us.
“Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant? Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God. But now, all you who light fires and provide yourselves with flaming torches, go, walk in the light of your fires and of the torches you have set ablaze. This what you shall receive from my hand: You will like down in torment” (Isaiah 50.10-11 NIV).
