“Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart” (Psalm 51.4 ESV).
Pride prevents God’s Truth from penetrating the inward parts of our being. Our pride works tirelessly to protect our self-interest, and we are void of the rest that is found in humility and brokenness to our God. We will never face our sins if the thick blanket of pride covers our hearts. And we will never know we are walking in darkness if the light hasn’t exposed the secret places of our souls. God does not delight in a heart that is constructed of its self-established works and self-confirmed glory; rather, He delights in a heart fully aware of its sin, choosing to walk outside of the corrupted flesh in the complete peace of the spirit. God will aggressively attack our pride, and the process of killing it is very painful. We may feel like we are not being valued, but the truth of the matter is that we have no value outside of Christ. All our worth comes from God, and the sooner we come to grips that we are nothing without Him, the quicker we will gain freedom from our tiresome pride. So instead of resisting the chance to humble ourselves, we should jump at the opportunity to slay pride and its sneaky devastation. Humility is the only gateway to receiving God’s honor in our lives, and pride seeks only to steal the wisdom we inherit from God’s unchangeable Truth.
“Before destruction the heart of a person is proud, but humility comes before honor” (Proverbs 18.12 NET).
