The Power of Belief
“So an officer on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God and said, ‘Look, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, could this thing be?’ And he said, ‘In fact, you shall see it with your eyes, but you shall not eat of it’” (2 Kings 7.2 NKJV).
Belief is the telltale sign if we really trust in God. Many times we don’t realize our disbelief until it is tested. God will reveal if we truly put our faith in Him when we are confronted with impossible situations that are completely out of our control. Joram, King of Israel, was confronted with an impossible situation. His kingdom was on the brink of collapse from the devastation of war and famine. The starvation got so bad that women were eating their children (2 Kings 6.28-29). Finally, the king had had enough, and he demanded that the prophet, Elisha, pray for the kingdom. At this time, a donkey’s head was sold for over 80 shekels of silver and a portion of dove droppings (which may also mean carob beans) was five shekels of silver (2 Kings 6.25 NKJV). Since 5 shekels was about one month’s worth of wages, this was a small fortune for such measly items (ref). However, Elisha (speaking under the influence of the Holy Spirit) declared that by the next morning 1 seah of fine flour (31 cups) and 2 seahs of barley (62 cups) would be sold for one shekel! King Joram’s officer spoke incredulously of such an impossibility. He said that even if God would put windows in the sky, this prophecy could not happen. The officer’s disbelief caused him to see God’s miracle, but he wasn’t able to partake in it. Our disbelief in God’s promises has major ramifications. If the Holy Spirit gives us a desire, dream or vision; we must believe it and cling onto faith even (and especially) when our faith is tested. When circumstances seem impossible, we know the fulfillment of our promise is near. If we truly have faith that God sent His Son, Jesus, to save our souls from eternal separation from Him, we can rejoice in the face of impossibility for all the secondary promises along the way!
“Then Jesus told them, ‘I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it’” (Matthew 21.21-22 NLT).
