“But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2.19 NIV).
I have a lot of special memories stored up from my time training to be an MMA fighter for a reality TV show. One memory in particular was my initiation into my MMA training. The trainers strapped me with pads and put me in the middle of the gym mat. Then they lined up all the “Little Dragons” (the young MMA students ages 4-8) in front of me and gave them large foam sparring noodles. The trainers explained to the Little Dragons that they would run to me with their sparring noodles and commence to hit me with them. I looked at the row of Little Dragons from behind my face-mask and couldn’t help but laugh. They all looked so cute staring at me with gigantic, mischievous smiles and wide, excited eyes. It was obvious that they couldn’t wait to attack me. One of the little faces was my son’s, and I will always treasure his expression of delight. Sometimes God asks us to do things that are difficult and uncomfortable, but those times can also provide us with our most cherished memories. I’m learning that as a Christian, life is almost never dull. God is always pushing me into crazy new areas; and I am constantly learning, growing, changing and developing. But I’m also storing up special memories in my heart, so I can pull them out to remind myself and others about our amazing God.
God, help me to trust You so completely that I’m not anxious and I don’t worry, so I’ll be able to appreciate the sweet moments in the middle of the storm. I don’t want to rush through the difficult parts of life and miss the beauty that can only be found there. Thank You for filling my heart with priceless memories that I’ll be able to reflect on the rest of my life. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
