“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverbs 18.21 NIV).
When I started training to be a MMA fighter, I knew almost nothing about that sport. Every time I would try to perform a move, I would do it wrong. I stood wrong, moved wrong, punched wrong, kicked wrong, grappled wrong – you name it, I did it wrong! Because this sport is already extremely demanding, starting from ground zero left me with very little to be encouraged about. I felt defeated, and if it hadn’t been for life-giving words spoken over me, I would have probably quit. The Bible says that tongue has the power to give life or death, and I was blessed to be surrounded by people who spoke life. My trainers encouraged me after every grueling training session. My pastors encouraged me every time I ran into them. My family and friends encouraged me when they saw me. My husband and twin sister encouraged me continuously. And, most of all, the Holy Spirit encouraged me. I tuned my ears to the fruit of their words and shut out all naysayers. Whenever God calls us into unknown territory that stretches our faith and resolve, we need to look for those encouraging words that will pave the way to our success and ignore the words that are out to destroy us.
God, help me to be an uplifter of people’s dreams. If the Holy Spirit is directing someone on a difficult path, I want to be a voice of support and empowerment. Also, train my ears to hear Your whispers of approval, and help me to focus on the encouragers and not on the discouragers. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
