“For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it” (Matthew 13.17 NIV).
The Old Testament prophets longed to see the promised Messiah that we have today through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We live in the New Testament age where Jesus’ Blood has been shed and God’s grace spread to the four corners of the earth. The world had been reconciled back to God because of Jesus’ Finished Work on the Cross. We literally live in the age of the Sabbath—Jesus has done all of the work. We receive His perfection by faith, and there is nothing we can do to earn it except to believe God at His Word. The Light of Christ has been revealed on earth and in our hearts. We can shine His glory by speaking this truth and revealing all that God has done for us and all that He shows us. We can rejoice by faith, knowing that we are living in a time that Godly men and women from history’s past longed to see. We no longer have Sabbath only one day a week; instead, we live in a time of the Sabbath, resting from all our human striving to be holy. Jesus has given us His holiness and has taken our sin. We can believe and cling onto this holiness, and live our lives as an expression of love and gratitude to our Savior, Jesus Christ.
“Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. The Lord has spoken!” (Isaiah 40.5).
