Day 34: Suit Choice
One of the fun aspects a bodybuilding competition is picking out the suit. There are so many colors and fabrics to choose from. Although there are standards in the suit design that every competition requires, the competitors have a great amount creative license to envision and create a suit that is unique to their individual taste and personality. Many people will try to add limits to suit creativity. They’ll say that certain colors and patterns work better for judging, but really that aspect of judging is subjective and cannot be predicted. If competitors are going to spend the money to have a suit made, they should get something that they like and feel comfortable in and not worry about what they think the judges may like or dislike.
My suit choice was simple, and although I think it matched my personality, I do not believe it changed my position on stage. I achieved a first-place, two second-places and a third-place trophy in the four divisions that I competed in, and my suit color and design would not have changed those victories. I was comfortable and felt good in what I wore. The color and design were simply a matter of opinion. God has a specific plan for our lives, but He does give us creative license to fill in the colors and patterns along the way. Yes, there are some things that God specifically requires, but there are other things that are a merely a matter of opinion. These creative details that are part of our purpose won’t cause us to lose or achieve the goals that God has place in our hearts—they simply decorate our journey along the way.
As Christians, we can feel like there is a strict design and/or color that our lives must adhere to. But God has designed each of us uniquely, and there is no cooking-cutter pattern to living out the Christian life. We may believe that every little detail has the ability to make or break us. However, I believe that God likes when we are creative, and He does give us creative license within the parameters of His Law and His Divine Plan for our lives. God created us in His image, and He gave us the talents, abilities and imagination to create for His glory. He may have a certain destiny for us, but we can bring the vision to fruition in our own beautiful way.
“So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1.27 NLT).
God, help me to be more confident and creative in the areas of my destiny that You have given me authority over. I know that You created me with a unique personality and a special design, and I want to demonstrate my imagination in the details of my life and faith. I trust that You have a special purpose just for me, and I look forward to coloring that purpose with my own unique style. Show me the areas in which You have given me creative license, and help me to express myself to the world. I want to be a living piece of art for You, Lord. I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
