Day 32: Cutting
The cutting period during competition preparation feels like a swift kick. It’s a lot of sacrifice squeezed into around six weeks. After I’ve gained all my muscle, I had to get rid of the extra fat, so the muscle could show. It doesn’t matter how much muscle I have gained if the judges can’t see it. Over a six-week span, I had to cut many foods out of my diet until the final week when my diet was extremely limited. During the final week, I only ate chicken or salmon with no seasoning, grapefruit, asparagus and a few other green veggies and maybe a little bit of sweet potato. Yes, the cutting period was difficult, but the light at the end of the tunnel was just around the corner, so the sacrifice was bearable.
Once I cut all of my weight, I was so surprised by how well my muscles showed. Every muscle was distinct, and I could see the improvements in each muscle group. Although “show weight” is not maintainable for long, the sacrifices that I was making demonstrated all of my hard work over the past nine months. My determination and efforts were displayed on my physical body. When God allows us to go through a “cutting” or difficult season; instead of focusing on the negatives, we can take this opportunity to show our strength. God does not promise that our lives will be easy, but He does say that He will give us a way to stand strong.
People are watching us, especially when difficult times arise in our lives. It’s easy to say God is good when we are enjoying our circumstances, but to say God is good during hard times takes faith. The cutting season in our lives is the time when people can really see our strength. They realize that all the worldly circumstances of happiness have been taken from us for a time, and they want to see if we are strong in the Lord. If our joy comes from the Lord, we can walk in peace no matter the situation. When we are rooted securely in Christ, nothing can knock us out of God’s hands. God will not allow the cutting season to last for long, but He will use it to reveal our faith in Him to the world.
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it” (1 Corinthians 10.13 NIV).
God, I know that cutting seasons will occur in my life, and I want my faith to be strong in You. I don’t want to feel defeated by my circumstances. Instead, I want all the time I spend in Your Word and with You in prayer to become obvious in my peace and joy that aren’t based on circumstances. I hope that when people look at my struggle that they will see someone who is confident in Christ. I want to use my hardships as an opportunity to demonstrate my faith and trust in You and in the Work of Jesus Christ in my life. Although I don’t desire hard times or enjoy them when they come, I will stand strong in Your Word because I know I can endure anything for a season with You on my side. I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
- Have you been through a difficult season in life?
- Were you able to stand strong or did you fall apart?
- How did God help you through the hard times?
God will provide a way to endure!
