Day 30: Personal Trainer
Hiring a personal trainer for my bodybuilding competition greatly improved my chances of placing well. Although I am a certified personal trainer myself, I wanted to train with someone who had experience in competing in the physique division. My trainer had competitive information and experience that she gradually imparted on me during our nine months of training. Not only did she teach me, but she helped me lift more in a smaller amount of time. When I work out by myself, I tend to take double the time. I rest a little longer in between sets, linger a little more at my phone and get distracted by what’s going at home. With someone constantly over my shoulder, though, I find myself lifting heavier, moving faster and working harder than I would alone.
People many times would tell me that they would like to compete, but that they didn’t have the time. Or they would look at me and say, “Wow, you must spend five hours in the gym every day.” But the truth was that with my trainer, I was only spending an hour a day lifting weights. It wasn’t until the last month of my competition that I started throwing in an extra 30-minute cardio routine. But really even an hour and half a day is not much compared to how much time I spend doing other things, like writing, cooking for my family and spending time with my husband. The Holy Spirit is much like a personal trainer. When we give Him a small portion of our day—reading God’s Word and spending time with Him—He will ensure that we can do more than we ever thought we could.
Giving God a portion of our day focuses our efforts and keeps us on track with what is truly important. We can get lost in all the pressures and demands that eat away at us each day, but when we learn to rest in God and rely on His timing, we will find that we have all the time we need to finish everything He has called us to achieve that day. People may look at our lives and think we have it easy. They may assume that we simply have more time than they do, but the truth is that everyone has 24 hours every day. When we allow God to be our own Personal Trainer, we will find that we do more than we could have ever thought or imagine when we stay obedient to His plan. God created us and wants us to make the most of this life that He has blessed us with. Only He can guide us on the best and most abundant paths.
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths” (Proverbs 3.6 NKJV).
God, I want you to be the Personal Trainer of my life. Help me to rely on You each day, so I can accomplish more with You than I could alone. I trust that You see what I cannot see and You know what I do not know. I want to lean on Your wisdom and will, so I can achieve many victories for Your glory on this earth. I realize that I have only one life and only 24 hours in each day, so I dedicate a small portion of it each day. I trust that You will guide my every step, making sure that I accomplish everything You have set out for me before time began. I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
- Do you take time to spend with God and read His Word each day?
- How can you make more time to let God direct your day?
- Have you been able to accomplish more when You rest in God?
Let God be your Personal Trainer!
