Day 20: Fat
Fat is a sign of extra. When people have storage of fat on their bodies, they can last days of famine because their bodies will start to break down the fat when food is no longer available. Fat is a necessary part of bodybuilding—both eating healthy fats and storing fat on the body. Eating healthy fats aids the body in absorbing certain nutrients and helps cell growth among other things. Allowing a healthy percentage of fat on the body will permit a bodybuilder to grow muscle. If the body is constantly starving, it will be difficult become stronger because the body is constantly in a calorie deficit.
Although fat needs to be shed several weeks before competition, the time of “bulking” before the time of “cutting” is extremely important. While having too much fat can be damaging, the body does need the right amount of fat in order to safely build muscle mass. The same goes with having “spiritual fat,” or what I like to call “spiritual overflow.” Christians need this spiritual overflow in order to serve others. The Bible says that Jesus came to give us life in abundance, so we can accomplish all that God has planned for us. Christians who are spiritually starving cannot be used well by God. If they are having trouble feeding themselves, it will be difficult to feed the people around them. Only Christians who have an overflow of God’s goodness can go onto share from the wellspring of the Holy Spirit within them.
We must seek to have that overflow, so we can pour out what we are learning onto our families, friends and spheres of influence. We can’t only focus on feeding ourselves. We want to be so full of God’s Spirit that we must serve others in order to use what we’ve been given. Ministry means to serve. Our ministry is all around us as we serve the people who God has placed in our midst. As we consume God’s Word, His Plan and His Spirit, we can share from the abundance within us. However, if our lives are constantly depleted of God, we won’t be able to serve the people around us with His goodness and grace. We need that Spiritual fat, so we can “abound in every good work.”
“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” (2 Corinthians 9.8 NIV).
God, I want You to help me gain some spiritual fat, so I can serve the people around me. I desire to abound in every good work as I fulfill my calling on earth. I need You to bless me abundantly while I faithful seek You and Your Word. I claim the peace of Jesus that is not based on circumstance. I pray that You use me, Lord. I want my actions to have eternal purpose, so my heavenly home will be filled with fruit of my faithfulness to You. I pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
- Do you have some spiritual fat in your life?
- What are you able to do to serve the people around You?
- What can you do to prevent a spiritual deficit?
It’s Time to Bulk Up!
