“Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, ‘Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.’ So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days” (Daniel 1.11-14 NIV).
Many times God wants to make a change in our lives. We can sense the change, but we don’t have the full vision of what God wants to accomplish. Since we can’t see the end result, it is difficult to make the strenuous steps towards change. Change is hard—no matter how good it is for us. But there is a way to get a glimpse of the power behind this change. We can follow Daniel’s lead and take the 10-day challenge. Daniel replaced royal food with vegetables, and examined to see whether this change had benefits or not. At the end of his 10 days, Daniel was 10 times better than all the rest of his peers!
The 10-day challenge is an easy gauge that will help us better see what God is trying to do in our lives. And once we commit to doing our change for 10 days and see the amazing results, the total transfer of habits will be easier to accomplish because we can finally grasp God’s bigger plan. We can do as Daniel did and test what the Holy Spirit is trying to accomplish in us, trusting that God always has our good in mind.
- First, pick a start and end date, making sure 10 full days will transpire.
- Second, make the transfer and replace a lesser habit with a better one.
- Third, watch as the 10 days unfold and see how your life is better as a result.
For example, replace drinking soda with drinking hot tea for 10 days. Replace an hour of TV time with an hour walk for 10 days. Replace complaining about work with rejoicing about work for 10 days. Replace speaking the negative with speaking the positive by faith for 10 days. Replace harboring unforgiveness with offering forgiveness for 10 days. Replace listening to the news with listening to inspirational podcasts for 10 days. Or replace flipping through Facebook to flipping through your Bible app for 10 days.
Make the change for 10 full days, and then look at your life and see how different one small transfer of habits can make. God will bless your faith. He only wants to make this change because He has something better for you in mind. Trust that God knows what He is doing. He sees what we cannot see, and His ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55.8-9). We may not fully understand the larger vision of God’s movements on earth, but we can get a small preview in the 10-day challenge to help us stay aligned with His Kingdom Plan.
“The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service. In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom” (Daniel 1.19-20 NIV).
