I live in a small city, so we are blessed to have holiday productions every year. I may have gone a little Christmas Crazy when purchasing tickets for Christmas shows. My family and I watched The Nutcrackerthe weekend after Thanksgiving. We are watching A Christmas Carol this weekend, and a later weekend we are watching Mannheim Steamroller Christmas. I just love being a part of the work and creativity of others! It is an honor to applaud their efforts and enjoy their talent.
I think much of our culture has taken the emphasis off of applauding others. So many people want to be the one on stage doing something impressive that they forget to experience the joy of watching others shine. It is truly a blessing to behold someone excel at what they do—whether it be ballet, acting, playing an instrument or any other imaginative outlet. We have the privilege of experiencing the beauty and giftings of others every day, but sometimes we are too rushed or self-focused that we miss out on much of it.
This holiday season, I encourage all of us to really enjoy the talents of those people in our families and communities. We don’t have to go to New York City or Las Angeles to experience the creative spirit. This is the time that many people and groups are clamoring to perform, create and produce a gift-offering in honor of Jesus’ birthday festivities. Let us stay fully aware and engaged when our children, friends, churches, local business and creative productions produce a holiday occasion for others. What we will find is that we are filled to the brim with delight and satisfaction, which will wonderfully balance out the busyness of the season.
“So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing”
(1 Thessalonians 5.11 NLT).
