“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time” (1 Peter 5.6 NIV).
God must bring us low before He can lift us high. He knows that humans by our default nature struggle with pride and self-glory, so He will not give us a platform to declare His Name until He works humility into us. If we are lifted high before humility becomes second nature, we will corrupt the very platform we use to exalt God. Every layer of pride must be exposed, so we can fully embrace a life of humility. The uncovering of pride takes years, and although we may always struggle with pride, we can come to the point where we surrender completely to the Lord. When we finally realize we can do nothing without God’s help, we can let go of self-perfection and walk in the perfect grace of Jesus Christ. It is not about us and what we can do. It is about God and what He can do. If God has promised us a platform to declare His name, we must be ready for the process of being brought low. We will feel like God has stripped us of everything that gives of a feeling of worth. But we shouldn’t get discouraged. God will place His worth into our bare souls, so we can confidently declare His glory to the world.
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up” (James 4.10 NIV).
