Cool Spring of Confession
“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness” (1 John 1.9 NLT).
Our pride keeps us in the dark. Our humility releases us into the Light. “God is light; in him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1.5). The most effective way to stay in God’s light is to confess. We can be like King David when he asked God to “know my heart” (Psalm 139.23). The Holy Spirit excels at pointing out and cutting away sin in our lives, so He can move His redemption into those renewed areas. The more sin we reveal to God, the more God can move His will and authority into our lives. Confessing to God is a daily task that will guarantee His fullness in our lives every day. Sometimes, however, the Holy Spirit will want us to take our confession one step further by confessing to a trusted confidante. Confessing our struggles to another person is one of the most humbling things we can do, but it is an excellent way to pierce our pride so God’s light can flood in. The Holy Spirit will let us know what to confess and to whom we should confess. And even though our pride will get badly bruised, we can trust that God’s forgiveness and healing will wash over us like a cool spring over hot coals. We will draw closer to God and become more like Jesus in the process.
“In confession there occurs a breakthrough to the cross. The root of all my sin is pride” – Dietrich Bonhoeffer
