“So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away” (2 Peter 1.10 NLT).
People fall away from the Lord when they forget the calling He has placed on their life. We all have been “called and chosen” to a destiny and purpose (Ephesians 1.11). God gives us authority to do a job on this earth; and if we do that job well, He will give us authority in heaven (Matthew 25.23). We meander from God’s will when we get sidetracked from our purpose. However, Peter gives us a hint to help us stay on track. He explains that if we add a few things to our faith, we will “never fall away.” They things include, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, kindness and love. Activating these attributes that are rightfully ours through the Holy Spirit will give us parameters in our calling that will prevent us from quitting. People quit for many different reasons, but if they are clinging onto goodness, self-control, perseverance, etc., they will not succumb to the desire to give up. Our journey to achieving our destiny will be littered with detours, pit stops and nay-sayers, but we can’t let them distract us and cause us to give up. When we truly believe that God has given us a “holy calling,” we won’t stop for anything or anyone. People may fall all around us, but we will keep on working our destiny until the day we meet Jesus face-to-face!
“Who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began” (2 Timothy 1.9 ESV).
