“People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3.7-8 NLT).
Taming the tongue will be every Christian’s constant battle. The tongue is very powerful; and when it is tame, it can move mountains (Mark 11.23). However, the tongue can be more wild than the wildest of animals. When unbridled and let loose, the tongue can cause havoc, devastation and death” (Proverbs 18.21). God has given us the authority to create with our words, and if we aren’t purposeful when we think and speak, we will unintentionally cause our lives and the lives of others to be limited or even miserable. We must comprehend and utilize the power of the tongue every moment of every day. We should harness any word that speaks anything contrary to God’s Word, and multiply all the words that speak God’s Heart. Even in random clichés or everyday talk, “I’m starving to death,” “I’ll never lose weight,” “I’m always broke,” “You gave me a heart attack,” and “No one loves me,” we declare words that don’t line up with God’s will. Instead, we can say words that affirm that we are loved by God and that we are growing stronger in His mercy and grace. Let us recognize every word we speak and adjust our negative talk, so our words agree with what God’s says. He says we are more than conquerors and loved by a Holy King (Romans 8.37 & 1 John 4.10). Let’s make sure our words speak this truth!
“Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin” (Proverbs 13.3 ESV).
