“Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you” (1 Timothy 4.14 NIV).
Although it would be nice, not all of us will have a body of elders lay their hands on us and speak a prophetic message over us about our gifting. God knows this, so He will establish a prophetic message about our gifting some other way. Many times, the Holy Spirit in us will whisper our calling into our hearts. Other times, a parent, pastor, teacher or mentor will recognize something some special in us and call it out. Yet other times our own passions and desires will draw God’s gifting out into the open. No matter how it arises, God has planted an extraordinary gifting in each of us that will help us fulfill the purposes for which God has called us. Many times, this gifting will be our biggest struggle and our biggest victory, and at one point or another we will want to give up. But Paul exhorts us not to give up on the gifting that holds the prophetic message to our destiny. We may be tempted to embark on a lesser, easier dream, but it will never satisfy the craving of our souls. Counterfeit callings will come and go, but we must stay strong in our prophetic calling. Also, we will watch others as they work out the prophetic gift inside of them, but we must stay faithful to the prophetic gifting that God has entrusted to us. We have only one prophetic destiny that will accomplish the best that God has planned for our lives.
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4.10 NIV).
