“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ” (Colossians 3.23-24 NLT).
God created everything, and He has made us each stewards of His creation. We can work for people and receive awards allotted by them—paychecks, grades, fame, notoriety, etc. But these things will be fleeting because people can only share what they have been already given by God. When we work for God, however, we are not simply given rewards. We are given an inheritance of His Kingdom. We are granted an everlasting portion of God’s fulfilling plan on earth and heaven that will never be taken or perish. We are in essence Children of God, showing ourselves faithful guardians of His supernatural agenda, so that in heaven God will give us dominion over our chosen inheritance. God will have us work for others on earth, but we serve them under the overlying theme of serving God. People may reward us, but our eyes are on the bigger prize—an inheritance from the Creator of the Universe. We can commit all that we say and do to the Lord, knowing that only He is the true and rightful master of everything. All that is created is under God’s authority, and we will work diligently in obedience to Him and not to the changing whims of humanity.
“His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful and trustworthy over a little, I will put you in charge of many things; share in the joy of your master’” (Matthew 25.23 AMP).
