Shouting the Foolish
“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God” (1 Corinthians 1.18 ESV).
A few good synonyms for the word for “folly,” are the words “foolish,” “stupid,” and “crazy.” These are pretty strong words, which would cause average Believers to sweep the Good News of the Cross under the rug, letting the world around them perish into eternal separation from God. But Paul replaced these negative words with the Truth: The cross is the power of God. The cross not only reconciles us (brings us back) to God, it gives us His power on this earth. The Cross of Jesus Christ is the single most important utterance that all of us will ever say. The cross is what gives us access to our Creator God, it is what makes our efforts pleasing to Him and it is what gives us rest from all of our human striving. The cross should not only be spoken by Believers in their homes, schools and workplaces, it should be shouted from every mountaintop (literally and metaphorically) that exist today. Yes, the world may think the cross is foolish, stupid and crazy; but those who understand its significance have the power of God at their fingertips. We must not let the world’s ignorance of the cross cause us to muffle our words concerning it. In fact, their ignorance should cause us to speak more loudly, so the people who are perishing can claim it.
“Men have said that the cross of Christ was not a heroic thing, but I want to tell you that the cross of Jesus Christ has put more heroism in the souls of men than any other event in human history.” –John G. Lake
