“So he said to me, ‘This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty” (Zechariah 4.6 NIV).
The Prophet Zechariah is speaking to Zerubbabel, the governor of Israel after the people returned to their homeland from Babylon. The foundation of the Second Temple had already been laid, but the construction of the temple had been delayed over and over again by the many obstacles impeding it. It seemed like the entire world was against the rebuilding of the temple. The tiny nation of Israel had so many enemies trying to stop every effort they made to obey God’s command to rebuild. It became easy to get discouraged and the temptation to give us was enticing. However, God gives Zerubbabel an amazing promise that is spoken to everyone who is trying to accomplish a great task of God. God says, “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit.” God knows that we can’t accomplish His will alone. In fact, He allows all the obstacles to come in the way of our dreams to force us to rely on Him, so all glory will go to Him and not to our own “might” and “power.” The dreams God gives us will never come easy. Just the opposite, they will seem impossible. But when we continue forward even during the bleakest situations, we show our trust in an all-powerful God. No matter the situation, if God has given us the command to go forward, we must believe that His Spirit will make a way when there is no way.
