“For they go up to their roofs and bow down to the sun, moon, and stars. They claim to follow the Lord, but then they worship Molech, too” (Zephaniah 1.5 NLT).
Tearing down idols can be a continual process. Every day we must choose to put God first in our lives. We have to make a conscious effort to step out of our selfish will and walk in submission to the Holy Spirit. But it is the struggle that reveals that we are truly trying to make God the center of our world. In a marriage, we must work daily to ensure that our union with our spouse is protected from outside forces that scheme to break the sanctity of our relationship. The same is true for our union with God through the Finished Work of Jesus Christi on the Cross. The enemy wants to bust through the doors of our relationship with God, tempting us to worship anything other than God. When people say that they worship God by the blood of Jesus Christ, but then go off and worship other manmade deities, they are committing spiritual adultery. And although they profess to love God, their feelings are fleeting and not established in a greater love, which includes submission, obedience, monogamy and faithfulness. When God is fully alive in our lives, there is no room for counterfeits. We can’t control God and shape Him into our comfortable, self-willed expectations. He is all-consuming fire, and our worship belongs to Him alone.
“For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God” (Deuteronomy 4.24 ESV).
