A Second Chance
“Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time….” (Jonah 3.1 ESV).
After Jonah was thrown into a storm and swallowed by a whale, God gave him a second chance to do what He had commanded Jonah to do. This time Jonah obeyed the Lord. If Jonah would have obeyed immediately, he would have spared himself all the additional trouble, but God stayed with him during every inch of the journey. God was in the mighty sea storm and God was in the pit of the sea monster with Jonah. God never left his side because Jonah did not deny the fact that he was running from God. Sometimes, it takes a few times for us to get it right and obey God’s commands. But as long as were are willing to admit our struggle and embrace the fact that we are having trouble obeying God’s command, He will continue to stay with us until we finally give up control and obey. God loves us and He knows that we are flawed mortals trying to follow a holy God. He is patient with us, and He will give us time to work through our issues until we finally come to the end of ourselves and take that scary step of faith He is asking of us.
“The Lord is good to everyone. He showers compassion on all his creation” (Psalm 145.9 NLT).
