“The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning” (Lamentations 3.22-23 NLT).
The worst thing that could happen had happened. Israel’s Promise Land had been taken from them. Reading how God established His children in the Promise Land through the demonstration of His love and power in the Old Testament, makes the destruction of the Chosen Nation that much more heart-wrenching. No wonder Lamentations’s description of Israel’s affliction is so passionate and outspoken. The people of Israel had forsaken their God, and the full force of their consequences devoured them almost to extinction. Yet, even in this midst of the turmoil and heartache, the writer of Lamentations declares that God’s mercies are new every morning. No matter the circumstances we find ourselves, God will pour out His mercy and compassion on us when we turn to Him. Our situation may not change right away, but we can have the greatest gift of all–reconciliation with God our Father through His mighty grace. And when we stay obedient to the Holy Spirit, God will transform us and our lives into a pleasing aroma to Him, changing our ashes into something beautiful for His glory (Isaiah 61.3).
“For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing” (2 Corinthians 2.15 NIV).
