Many movies seem innovative and inspiring with their “alternate reality of redemption” plot. Evil choices create a future filled with chaos and corruption. So a hero goes back into time, and changes history in such a way that an alternate reality comes into play. This new reality is redeemed from the prevailing evil choices, and humanity enjoys a level of peace and beauty that was once obsolete.
Sounds amazingly impossible, right? But it’s not impossible; it’s true! Our God who is eternal chose to come back into our time to provide for us a redeemed alternate reality. I don’t know why He chose the date He did, but something about that moment over 2,000 years ago was pivotal. An explosion of forgiveness, grace and love stretched across the years–moving forward and backward–and death, corruption and sin were all defeated.
God came to us as a baby known as Jesus and changed history. Through Jesus, the evil choices of humanity were overcome, and people everywhere have an alternate reality of redemption at their fingertips. If we accept the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for our sins, we gain a righteousness that is amazingly impossible for us to achieve on our own, but this righteousness allows us to enjoy a relationship with a Holy God in this life and the next (Romans 3.23 & 2 Corinthians 5.21).
There is nothing new under the sun (Eccles. 1.9), and God has written eternity in the heart of every person (Eccles. 3.11). Movie makers are simply repeating an eternal truth in each of their blockbuster creations. We have a savior. His name is Jesus Christ. He redeemed our history (1 Peter 1.18-19). He gives each of us a fresh start (Eph. 1.7). We are a new creations in Christ (2 Cor. 5.17). Death no longer has its sting (1 Cor.15.55).
Once we are born into this new reality, we will walk a path of two worlds during this life. We remember the old world, but we can learn to embrace this new world of faith. We are surrounded by people who still resist or deny this alternate reality. But the truth is that soon Jesus is coming back, and He will vanquish the old world and everyone will acknowledge that He is the savior (Revelation 21.1). Jesus is the only true blockbuster Hero of this world (Philippians 2.10).
