My mother came to visit us for my older sister’s 40th birthday. My mom, my twin and I all threw my sister a Fabulous and Forty hot pink and zebra birthday party. We had games, a candy bar and lots of Mexican food! It was a blast, and my older sister was so blessed! She’ll have memories to keep for a lifetime.
The following Monday, I got up early to take my mom to the airport. We live in a beach town, so sometimes the winter gulf breeze cools the water vapors inland to their dew point, and fog forms over the coastal area. It was early in the morning, and the sun hadn’t risen to disperse the thick fog. I had to drive my mother through layers of white, barely able to see the street signs in front of me.
I felt tense the entire drive, and I even missed the airport exit and had to get off the highway and turn around. I normally don’t mind the fog, but I felt a pressure to get my mother to the airport safely and on time. I was so relieved when we made it! My mother and I prayed, and I watched her walk to the terminal.
On the way home, the fog was still thick, but the tension I felt earlier abated. I realized how much stress I was carrying because I love my mom and I care for her safety. Love is an extremely heavy burden when we forgot that God is ultimately in charge. God loves my mother more than I do; and no matter what happens, He is carrying her life in His hands.
I want to love others and serve in the capacity to which I’m called, but I also need to admit that I can’t carry the burden of love alone. I am not perfect, and I can’t cause the sun to rise and vanquish the fog. But there is a God in heaven who is mighty and powerful. He loves with an unfailing love and His purposes are always for our good. I can rely on God to give me strength when I need it, and I can trust that not even the fog surprises Him.
Questions: Have you ever collapsed in despair with the burden of those you love? Are you unknowingly carrying tension that is not good for you? How can you rest your love and care for others in God’s hands today?
“Fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand”
– Isaiah 41.10 (ESV)
