Honor the King
“But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command delivered by the eunuchs. At this the king became enraged, and his anger burned within him” (Esther 1. 12 ESV).
Vashti means “beautiful.” Queen Vashti had obviously taken her husband, the most powerful man alive at this time, for granted and put too much stock in her own beauty. The king’s courts were filled with guests, and he wanted to honor his bride by praising her beauty before the people. However, the queen was so wrapped up in her own selfishness that she not only missed out on the chance to be celebrated, she also shamed her husband in front of everyone. She couldn’t be bothered to submit to her husband’s simple request to come be with him. Today, we have a King that wants to honor and praise us before the world as His special bride, yet many times we shun God’s every effort to spend time with us. What a shame! We are so occupied with ourselves that we can’t even take a moment to speak with God in prayer and listen to His voice through the Bible and the Holy Spirit We become angry with God because we are not living in His promised abundance as His special and beloved creation, but we are our own problem! How can the King honor his bride when she doesn’t submit to His requests? How can we possibly hear the King’s call when we are so absorbed in our own self-interest, feelings and desires? Let us show honor to God by dropping everything when He calls. Let us keep our hearts attentive to the King, so we can live in the full beauty He has for us!
“But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained’” (1 Samuel .30 NIVb).
