Since summer is coming into full swing, I decided to wear a beachy outfit to church. I do live in a coastal town, I thought. I pulled on a jean skirt that hit just above me knees and slipped on a pair of Reef flipflops. Then, I stood in front of the row of colorful shirts lining my closet. What would be the perfect leisure shirt to wear, I wondered.
My eyes traveled past the button-up collared shirt–too formal; beyond the embroidered t-shirt–too simple; and over the stretchy black and white shirt—to monochromatic. Finally, I beheld a white, cotton polo style shirt that I had just purchased—too perfect!
However, before I took the shirt off of the hanger, I felt the Holy Spirit whisper, “What about the blue one?”
When I find a shirt that I really like, I sometimes buy two of them in different colors. This way I can enjoy the same style shirt more frequently. I remembered that when I bought the white shirt, I also bought a blue one.
Okay, I figured. It doesn’t really make a difference which color I wear. Denim goes with everything! I searched through my closet quickly, knowing that I had only a few minutes to finish getting ready. I gave one last sweep with my eyes before giving up the search when I finally spied the blue shirt squished between two other garments.
I swiftly tugged the shirt off the hanger, yanked it over my head and hurried back to the bathroom mirror to finish putting on my makeup. As my family and I headed off to get tacos before church, I forgot all about my shirt swop. The Holy Spirit leads me in little, crazy ways; and I have long since given up questioning His direction.
When tacos were consumed, we leisurely walked to the car. My older two boys can buckle their own seatbelts, but my husband and I take turns buckling up our four-year-old girl. Since it was my husband’s turn to do the honors, I waited in the front seat, watching the people walk by. Suddenly, I noticed a woman wearing a blue cotton polo style shirt, heading toward the restaurant. I looked at the emblem on the shirt, and realized it was the exact shirt that I was wearing!
“Pray for her,” the Holy Spirit whispered.
I don’t believe in coincidences. I know for a fact that God orchestrated my morning, so I could notice that woman. I prayed for her every day until the Holy Spirit lifted the burden. I had no clue what I was praying for, but the Holy Spirit knew what she needed (Romans 8.26). I used my free will to speak God’s truth into another person’s life, and not for one second do I believe my words came back void.
Questions: Did you know that your prayers are powerful? How can you incorporate constant prayer into your lifestyle? Who can you start praying for daily?
“Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere” (Ephesians 6.18 NLT).
