A Blessing for God
My husband and I were driving and talking about his job. He works in the medical field and serves people all day. And like most service-oriented jobs, it’s easy to get burned out. It is hard to work with people on a daily basis because people are not perfect: We are sometimes ungrateful, undeserving and unsatisfied.
Then I brought up a new topic. God has been doing so much for my husband and me and for our family that I really wanted to bless Him. I wanted to do something special just for God that He wasn’t expecting. “What can we do for God that would really bless Him?” I asked my husband. My husband then stated that Jesus said that when we serve others, we have served Him.
I thought about that for a moment, and I looked to the back seat of the car where both my sons were buckled up in their car seats. Then I realized something. If someone wanted to give me a blessing, I would automatically say, “Don’t give it to me. Give it to my sons.” As a mother, I would find more joy in seeing my sons receive gifts than if I would receive them myself.
That is exactly what God wants from us. He wants us to bless each other. God is the ultimate father and He is blessed when we spread joy to His children. At that moment my question suddenly changed. I asked my husband, “What can we do for God’s children, so we may be a blessing to God?”
“The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’”
– Matthew 25.40 (NIV)
“Father, help me to be a blessing to You today. Show me how I can spread joy into the hearts of the children that You created and love. Lord, You have blessed me beyond measure and I am so undeserving. Allow me to share the joy that You have given me. Bring to my mind what I can do for someone today.”
