Jesus’ mother could definitely keep a secret. She spoke to angels, became pregnant as a virgin, was blessed by prophets, received gifts from Magi and escaped the genocide of firstborn sons. By the time she was still a young woman, she had a life filled with miracle memories surrounding the birth of our world’s Messiah and her Son, Jesus. But instead of divulging her astounding secrets, the Bible says that Mary treasured them up in her heart (Luke 2.19).
People usually explore the negative aspects of sharing secrets (e.g. gossip, judgment, strife, etc.), but the Holy Spirit has been teaching me about the positive aspects of keeping secrets. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that God chose Mary—probably the best secret keeper in all of history—to raise the Baby of our Hope and Salvation.
As a writer, keeping secrets is difficult. I can make a God-moment out of almost any situation, and I love to spin stories into learning moments with the Holy Spirit. I might be introverted in person, but on paper I am an open book with plenty to say. But I’m realizing that some secrets are too good to share. Some, in fact, will benefit me far more if I treasure them up.
The secrets I want to focus on are the ones where we follow the prompting of the Holy Spirit and God does something uniquely wonderful. We go out of our way to make a sacrifice and someone is blessed in return. Many times God uses those stories to edify others, so there is nothing wrong with sharing them. However, I think that if we follow the Holy Spirit’s leading, a few of those stories can be tucked into our hearts as seeds for God to bless.
The Bible says that anything we do in secret, God will reward us in the open (Matthew 6.1-4). I don’t know about you, but I would much rather be blessed by God than by people. So I’ve decided to open the treasure chest of my heart and start placing my God-moments inside. I don’t share them on Facebook. I don’t write about them on my blog. I don’t tell my closest confidante. Nope. I just store them up and let God do the rest.
I think God loves those little seeds of goodness, because He gets to grow them into awesome demonstrations of His glory. The seeds are planted into His eternal domain, and He can convey His love for us and show off His brilliant creativity on this earth. God has given us so many beautiful moments. Why not hold a couple of them back for Him?
What little secret can you give God today?
“So that your deeds of charity may be in secret; and your Father Who sees in secret will reward you openly”(Matthew 6.4 AMP).
