God’s Powerful Arm
“And when they arose early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen on its face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. The head of Dagon and both the palms of its hands were broken off on the threshold; only Dagon’s torso was left on it” (1 Samuel 5.4 NKJV).
The Ark of God is the physical representation of God’s presence and glory in Israel, and it is taken by the Philistines (an oppressive nation to Israel). The Philistines put the Ark into their temple next to their idol, Dagon. Dagon is a god of fertility, which they worship in order to have abundance in every area of their lives. However, when the Ark and Dagon share a temple, Dagon is found the next morning lying face down in the dirt. The Philistines put Dagon back up, and the next morning it is found face down again; but this time, Dagon’s hands and head are severed from its body. This is very encouraging for us today! As Christians, we constantly struggle with having idols in our lives. But instead of focusing on them, we can seek God and allow His presence and glory to fill our temples (body, mind and soul). And when God dwells next to an idol in our temple, the idol will fall. If it comes back up, God’s presence will break its hands and head, which means that God will break the idol’s work, influence and stronghold over us. We don’t have to tear the idol down in our own weak efforts; we simply to need give God His rightful place as King in our lives and watch His mighty arm move!
“Powerful is your arm! Strong is your hand! Your right hand is lifted high in glorious strength” (Psalm 89.13 NLT).
