“The men of Israel looked them over and accepted the evidence. But they didn’t ask God about it” (Joshua 9.14 MSG).
Joshua is leading the people of Israel into their Promise Land, and they are claiming and securing dominion over the area that God has given them. Since the Enemy knows that he can’t stop God’s chosen people from establishing their nation, he decides to plant as many snares into their land as possible. The Enemy can then use these skillfully placed traps to ensnare God’s people into sin at a later date. The Hivites deceived Joshua and the leaders of Israel by claiming they were from a distant land. Instead of consulting with God, the people of Israel accepted the false evidence presented to them and made an alliance with a nation that God said He would drive out of their Promise Land (Exodus 34.11). The Hivites would become one of the handful of nations that would test Israel and cause them to forsake God (Judges 3.4-6). For this reason, it is very important that we daily consult God about all of our decisions. The Enemy might not be able to stop us from entering our Promise Land, but he will diligently lay out a spiritual minefield in our path. Whether pride, vanity, lust, greed, selfishness, insecurity, lies, deceit, fear, addictions — Satan will plant anything and everything to get our eyes off God so we will wind up “piling up sins.” But if we simply consult God first, we will save ourselves loads of trouble, heartache and time.
“’What sorrow awaits my rebellious children,’ says the Lord. ‘You make plans that are contrary to mine. You make alliances not directed by my Spirit, thus piling up your sins'” (Isaiah 30.1 NLT).
