Lessons I learned from Reality TV & MMA
“He makes me as surefooted as a deer, enabling me to stand on mountain heights” (Psalm 18.33 NLT).
My first day training with my lead MMA coach was eye opening. The seemingly trivial things, like standing, walking and turning were all different and strange. I had to position and move my body in a totally new way. My coach showed me how to walk, and I remember thinking that his feet looked like the feet of a deer. He stepped on the balls of his feet, so at any moment he could change direction. Also, he never crossed his feet because that would expose his body to falling over easily. I had to practice over and over again to be able to walk like a deer. The day before my fight, my twin sister called me with a verse that God had given her for me. Psalm 18 was written by King David, and it is all about preparing for battle. I especially loved the part of the verse which promised we would be “surefooted as a deer.” I know that God will always prepare my feet for the battle He has placed before me. Whether I am wearing high heels, running shoes, work boots or no shoes….God is readying my feet to stand on “mountain heights” of victory.
God, I know that the “mountain heights” you have for us will not be easy to scale, but I also trust that you will prepare our feet for the climb. You call us to victories that are difficult and scary, but I know from first-hand experience that once we make it to the top, the view of understanding and faith surrounding us is life-changing. I’m willing to work hard because I want to be overwhelmed by Your glory. I pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
